Match 38: MI v. RC: Duminy and Rahane help MI find Victory!

In an important match between MI and RC, a win for either team would them to stay in the competition. Though it looked like the RC, finally it was the Mumbai Indians who went home with the smile!

Deciding to bat first, the start was not good as Sachin's bat took an outside edge and went to Boucher. He went for a duck. Jayasuriya back in the side, scored an useful 29. He was unlucky to be given lbw which would have missed the stumps. He built a 48-run partnership for the 2nd wicket with Rahane. It was Rahane and Duminy, who took the MI innings to a different level.

These two added unbeaten 104 runs for the 3rd wicket. At the end of 10 overs, MI were 67 for 2. Merwe was bowling well with 1 for 7 in his 2 overs.

These two players took MI beyond 100 in 15 overs. From the 15th over to 17th over, Duminy hit a six in each over, while Rahane each a four in 18th and 20th. Duminy for his part, hit a four in 19th and 20th.

Both the batsmen crossed 50, which was an important positive for MI. Rahane reached 50 first in 43 balls whle Duminy reached it in 37 balls. They scored 53 runs in the last 5 overs to take MI past 150 and set a target of 158.

RC missed the nice chance to score 2 points. The issue for them was the regular fall of wickets. For every 15 or 20 runs, they were losing wickets. This brough the new batsmen into the crease who took time to settle and was also under pressure not to lose his wicket.

Kallis upper cut a short ball from Malinga but it went straight to fielder in third man who took a low catch, RC 23 for 1 in 3.5 overs.

Uthappa went in the over caught by Tendulkar for 4. Kohli hit couple of fours from Bravo and kept moving the run rate. End of powerply, RC were 39 for 2.

Kohli, showed that he lacks experience at this level. He was the settled batsmen with 20 runs in 22 balls. He gave a simple straight catch at midwicket to Duminy.

Dravid joined Ross Taylor and kept the scoreboard moving. The crucial blow came in the 10th over when Rahul Dravid was run out for 10. Taylor sent the ball to long off calling for two. Dravid was struggling at the bowler's end as the throw from Malinga came straight to Harbhajan who aptly removed the bails. Unnecessary run put RC on the back seat. End of 10 overs, RC were 58 for 4, requiring 100 in the last 10.

Taylor hit a six in the first over after break and looked like he was ready to compensate for the Dravid's wicket. But, he got out for Malinga, who bowled a beautiful delivery, Taylor tried to play it to leg and missed it. The ball removed the stumps.

Boucher and Merwe was expected to take over, but Merwe was stumped off Harbhajan. Last 5 overs needed 58. Boucher and Vinaykumar scored 13 in the next 2 overs. Vinay was also stumped off Harbhajan. Last 2 overs needed 40 runs with Boucher and skipper Kumble putting their best. Bravo, though gave away a four in the 5th ball, bowled a tight line and restricred RC with 7 runs.

Malinga had the ball in the last over. Boucher hit a six over straight boundary in the second ball. But the next two balls were bowled well and only two singles were scored. Boucher scored a four of the 5th ball but it was too late. This helped in reducing the gap and improving the net run rate.

Duminy once again grabbed the man of the match!

Match 35: DD v. MI: Easy win for DD! MI let down by Bat!

In a match with a few changes in Mumbai Indians camp for a much needed win, nothing went as per plan. Sanath Jayasuriya was rested while Sachin came down as number 4.

Not sure why Sachin decided to bat! Ronchi and Duminy opened the innings. With a wide in the 2nd ball and still 20 overs to go, I do not know why Ronchi took a risky single hitting straight to Warner at covers. Warner hit directly at non-striker's end to give DD the first wicket.

In the same over, Duminy trying to steer it towards thirdman, while a slip was in place, took the edge and went straight to Karthik. Two wickets in the first over with both the men getting out for a duck.

No difference for Sachin in coming at number 4 as he anyway was forced to play from the end of first over. The first boundary came from Sachin in the fifth over. He hit 2 fours to bring MI to 25 for 2 in 5 overs.

A late return by Sachin cost his wicket. He played the ball with soft hands and the ball went behind the stumps. Sachin started for a run but Sangwan said no. He just took few steps but Karthik was quick to pick the ball and hit the stumps. Replay showed that Sachin was just short. Crucial wicket was lost for MI.

RP Shah went in the next over trying to clear long-on. At the end of 10 overs, MI were 43 for 4. Bravo and Sangwan played slowly but played responsibly. Nayar missed a freehit chance in the 15th over. At the end of 15 overs, 74 for 4.

The 16th over was a good one for MI as Nayar started with a good four of a full toos over mid wicket. Single brought Bravo to strike as he hit a six over long on to bring the 50 partnership. He pulled a short ball to midwicket for a boundary before getting out in the last ball for 35.

Nayar fell immediately in the first ball of the next over as MI slumped to 91 for 6 in 17 overs. Rahane and Bhajji hit a four and a six respectively in the 18th over.

Rahane scored a single of free hit chance in the 19th. Harbhajan got out in the same over to Nehra for 10. At the end of 19, MI were 114 for 7.

MI last all the remaining three wickets in the last over bowled by Bhatia. Raje was bowled in the first ball, while Rahane was caught deep point in the fourth ball. Kulkarni was run out going for a second run in the last ball as MI ended their innings with 116.

Chasing 117 was not difficult for DD with their batting line up. Warner banged Malinga with a six over long on. He picked the slower ball and sent it behind the ropes. End of six overs, DD were 36 for no loss.

The first break through came in the 9th over. Duminy's flight and turn had Warner come down the track and swing the bat, but he was beaten by the turn and stumped by Shah. Gambhir fell in the next over caught at deep cover by Ronchi to give a wicket to Bhajji. End of over 10, DD were 52 for 2, requiring 65 in the last 10.

DeVilliers played responsible innings and scored unbeaten 50, his second in this edition of IPL. Dilshan and deVilliers added 61 for the 3rd wicket with the latter scoring most of the runs. Dilshan was caught behind in the 18th over for 17.

DeVilliers and Dinesh Karthick finished the match with 7 balls remaining. With this defeat, MI are almost out of the tournament unless something dramatic happens!
