IPL 2009: Grand Gala Closing Ceremony as Katrina and Akon bring down curtains!

The IPL 2009 has seen tremendous response from all over the country. Though initial reports show lesser TRP rate, it has reached far more people that last year.

The event was a grand success as it was decided in the last minute to move out of India. The South African authorities made all the arrangements in a short time and made it a wonderful event for the cricketing world.

First year, it was Rajasthan Royals who occupied the presentation podium. RR beat CSK in the final to win the first edition of IPL.

Second year, the teams which finished last in the 1st edition clashed in the final. Hyderabad Deccan Chargers beat Bangalore Royal Challengers by 6 runs to clinch the title.

The closing ceremony was well planned with a wonderful orchestra. It had multiple events with all of them attracting the spectators. The fireworks, flying lanters

The ceremony started with the welcome address by Modi then an address by South African President Jacob Zuma. He thanked the organizers for choosing his country, thanked bolloywood stars Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty for coming to SA. He also mentioned that the team names have become household names across the county.

He further added that advertising spend, tourism potential and global exposure have benefited SA very well.

Around 1 500 flying lanterns were lit and released to the amazement of the crowds, while several thousand rounds of dazzling fireworks lit the Johannesburg skyline.

Katrina Kaif along with Akon gave a breath-taking performance. She danced well for the Oscar winning Jay Ho song.

Katrina entertained the audience to the fullest inspite of her team the Royal Challengers Bangalore losing to the Deccan Chargers Hyderabad.

The evening was also festooned with the performance of Eddy Grant who sang his popular number, "Walking In The Sunshine" and "Gimme Hope Jo'anna".

The Indo-African fushion was fantastic as it gave a wonderful cultural flavor to the audience.

After all these, the main event, trophies were presented to the winners. Momentos were given to umpires, medals were given to runners and winners.

Kumble took the man of the match for his 4 wickets. Rohit Sharma won the upcoming under-23 cricketer award, Hayden won the Orange Cap for leading run scorer, RP Sing the Purple Cap for leading the wickets tally, and Gilchrist the all-rounder award.

It was a fantastic end to the mega event! Congratulations to the organizers and everyone involved in the success of this event!

Laxman was told "His service Not Required" for DC: Gilchrist

Gilchrist has come out openly and said that his predecessor was already given notice about excluding him from the team.

VVS Laxman captained Hyderabad Deccan Chargers in IPL 2008 but did not find any success. He his leadership post was replaced by former Australian keeper Adam Gilchrist. He managed some wins but ended in the 7th position. Bangalore finished lost at 8th position.

This year, DC started aggressively and surprised everyone with their performance. Adam Gilchrist became the second top run scorer behind the orange cap winner Matthew Hayden from Chennai Super Kings.

"VVS Laxman went through a lot obviously emotionally as he had the captaincy taken away from him and he has been here and played just five games. We told him that we did not need him in the end of the tournament. But we wanted him to contribute--his vast knowledge, experience and another thing that is a wonderful example that not only Twenty 20 players but also a senior player like him wants to learn how to play Twenty20 format. He has worked with our fitness trainer, fielding coach and head coach Darren Lehmann. So, that is exciting to see that VVS epitomises what the franchise has been this year," Gilchrist was quoted as saying Monday on the official IPL website.

Laxman played just 5 matches this season and was not seen after that. He was not available in the dug-out also. He became visible in the presentation ceremony to collect his medals with the happy Chargers with the trophy.

Gilchrist's Captaincy made the difference, says Afridi!

The Pakistani all rounder and dashing batsmen Shahid Afridi has said that the change in Hyderbad's Decccan Chargers has made a big difference this year.

Last year, DC was positioned 7th out of the 8 positions and Royal Challengers ended at 8th. These two teams clashed for the 2009 title in South Africa on May 24th.

DC beat RC by 6 runs in the last over thriller. The match was in the hands of Bangalore until Symonds took 2 wickets in an over to turn the match towards Hyderabad.

Last year, Afridi made a controversial comment about change in the captaincy after DC lost most of the games. He said, Gilly should take over the captaincy from VVS Laxman. This created a panic in the team but he latter clarified that the statement was not made to insult Laxman. He said, Laxman is the best test player but his captaincy was not aggressive for T20 format.

"People misunderstood what I wanted to say. I never meant any disrespect to Laxman who is a top Test player. But I just felt that his captaincy was not aggressive enough for T20 cricket. Laxman's captaincy was one of the reasons for the team not doing well in the first year. One can see the difference that Gilchrist brought to the team as captain."

He also appreciated Gilchrist's captaincy and said that he is one of the best captains he has seen.

"Gilchrist is one of the best captains I have seen. He leads from the front. He is strong enough to take sensible and aggressive decisions in pressure situations and his backing of the younger players was very impressive. This was more or less the same team that played last year. But the captaincy made a big difference to the team."

People can talk several things after the completion of an activitiy, but they keep mum until it happens. In this case, Afridi has said about switching over captaincy a year ago and has proved that he is right about it!

Match 59: Final: RC v. DC: DC Win IPL 2009! Bowlers did the trick for DC!

What a tense final? The spectators and cricket lovers cannot ask for anything more!

Requiring 15 in the last over, the purple cap winner RP Singh bowled very well to give Deccan Chargers the IPL 2009.

Kumble got a single in the first ball to give strike to Uthappa. The next two balls were no runs. Third ball was a two to long on.

2 balls, 12 runs. four leg byes in the 5th ball and the last ball was a single as they win the IPL 2009. Poor batting cost the match for Royal Challengers. They looked to win, but the batting collapse gave the match to DC.

Put into bat by Kumble, RC had a dream start! Kumble opened the bowling considering the left handed Gilly on strike. This is not the first time he was opening the bowling.

Gilly made quick fire 85 in 35 balls in the semi final against DD and took the match away single handely. He was just 51 runs away from grabbing the orange cap from Hayden.

Kumble restricted Gilly in the first two balls. Gilly came down the track off a slow flighted delivery, missed the wrong one and lost his stump. Gilly gone for a duck! Good start for Royal Challengers!

Vinaykumar picked Suman caught by Pandey at point. It was a good catch as he ran backwards and also had two more fielders approaching for the catch.

During his knock, Symonds hit 3 fours in Kallis over which improved the run rate of DC. He also hit a six of Merwe over mid wicket.

Symonds and Gibbs added 40 runs for the 3rd wicket. Symonds made quick fire 33 off 21 balls which had 4 fours and a six. Kumble provided the break through again. Symonds cannot connect the short ball, hits him under the arm, drops onto his thighs and then lands on leg stump to dislodge the bails. Unlucky Symonds and lucky Kumble!

At the end of 10 overs, DC were 62 for 3. The 15th over from Praveen Kumar gave a boost to the DC innings. He went for two sixes--one by Gibbs and the other one by Rohit Sharma. That over added 20 runs to the total and took DC to 100.

Kumble picked his 3rd wicket by picking Rohit Sharma caught by Panday at mid off. Pandey covered lot of ground to take a good diving catch as Rohit did not connect the ball well. His 4th wicket was Venugopal caught by Taylor for a duck.

Gibbs reached his fifty with a six of Praven Kumar. He was the only batsmen stood in the crease, but could not play a big innings to take DC beyond 150.

DC ended with 143 for 6 in 20 overs.

IPL 2009 Points Table

Match 58: Semi Final 2: Poor Batting Cost CSK the Final Spot! RC to meet DC in Final!

The nice chance to beat the Bangalore Royal Challengers was missed by Dhoni's men. Put into bat, the good start was not utilized by the middle order batsmen as they just played singles rather than going for big shots.

Hayden and Parthiv Patel played well and added 61 for the first wicket in 7 overs. Patel played well and took some risks. As usual, Hayden also took the risk which Dhoni did not. The only shot risky shot he played was in the 18th over and got out.

Hayden going for a big shot over long on, did not time it well and was caught for 26. Patel followed him in the 9th over trapped leg before off Kallis. He was the top scorer for CSK with 36 off 27 balls with 7 fours.

Dhoni and Raina played singles though the latter took some risk against Kumble and Merwe. Raina, came down the track, miscued the lofted shot off a slower one from Praveen Kumar. The ball went in the air which Boucher grabbed it easily. His 20 came in 19 balls with a four and a six.

Dhoni was playing singles, which I would rate as a very poorly planned and played innings. What's going to happen if you get out trying for big shots? Still CSK had Morkel, Badrinath, Oram yet to bat!

CSK added just 39 runs in the last 5 overs. From 74 for 2 in 10 overs, they added 72 in the last 10. Poor batting in a crucial match! The team was rated high for the batting strength, but it failed in a crucial match!

Vinaykumar bowled the last over very well. He gave away just 6 runs and picked the wicket of Oram. He mixed his deliveries very well that restricted CSK to less than 150.

Chasing 147 in a semi final is difficult, but not with a good start. Though it was not like what Gilchrist did against DD, a pleasant and decent start.

Pandey hit two beautiful fours in successive deliveries of Morkel in the first over. Kallis also hit two fours of Gony in the first two balls. Trying to play off drive, the ball took the outside edge and went to Parthiv Patel.

Muralitharan dropped a chance for Merwe at mid on, running backwards. But, Merwe was bowled in the next delivery from Morkel.

Pandy continued his good form and smashed two more fours in the 4th over bowled by Gony. Dravid missed the free hit chance in the same over which went for a single.

Boundaries were scored in almost every over or the alternate overs. Other poor decision from Dhoni was to put Muralitharan behind the wheel until the 10th over. Though Murali controlled the run rate, RC did not lose the wickets.

A close decision against Pandey was not given. It was plumb but Tuffnel denied it off Muralitharan. Pandey missed fifty by 2 runs when he went for a slog of Jakathi and lost his stump.

End of 15 overs, RC were 110 for 3. With 37 needed in 5 overs, Dravid was trapped leg before by Muralitharan and he gave just 2 runs. 35 from 4 overs.

Taylor and Kohli took the charge and hit a six each of Raina in the 17th over. The target was revised to 20 from 18 balls.

Kohli hit a six of Muralitharan in the 18th over.

12 runs from 12 balls. Taylor hit a six off Oram in the 19th over. It was a waist height full toss and despatched to square leg boundary. Poor bowling from Oram in a crucial stage. Kohli finished the formalities with a boundary played off the pads and RC reach final with 7 balls remaining.

Royal Challengers beat Chennai, to meet DC in Finals!

The two South Indian teams that would clash in the finals are Hyderabad Deccan Chargers and Bangalore Royal Challengers.

In the second semi final, Royal Challengers beat the tournament favorite Chennai Super Kings by 6 wickets with 7 balls remaining.

I would say that the batsmen of CSK let them down than the bowlers. Restricting 147 in the knock-out stage is always difficult especially in a batting wicket.

Kumble asked Chennai to bat first who scored 146 in 20 overs losing 5 wickets. Parthiv Patel top scored with 36 and for Royal Challengers, Pandey top scored with 44. He played a wonderful innings and all the fours were treat to the eyes! His century in the previous match must have added lot of confidence to the batsmen!

The teams finished last in the first season have bounced back very well to meet in the finals!

So, it is DC v. RC in the final.

Match 57: Semi Final 1: DC v. DD: Gilchrist's One Man Show destroy DD!

What a batting performance from Gilchrist! Everyone knows that he is a dangerous batsman and he proved it one more time in the internationl cricket. He took Deccan Chargers to the Final single handedly, though the bowlers also helped in restricting DD to mere 153.

Chasing 154 in the semi final, knock-out is always difficult and a pressure job. Gilchrist took all the pressure on himself and took DC to the final. He scored 85 in just 35 balls with 10 fours and 5 sixes. He is the leading batsman to have scored most sixes in this season of IPL.

On the way to 85, he also created the record for scoring fastest fifty which came in just 17 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes.

The chase started powerfully for Deccan Chargers as Gilchrist scored 5 continuous fours in the first over from Nannes. He started with a pull over square leg, then a push past the bowler, a slash over point, good drive through extra cover, and the last one was past mid on. End of over 1, DC were 21 which had a wide as well.

Gibbs failed in the crucial match and was bowled by Nehra for a duck. Why did he do that? He came down the track and swung blindly and lost his stump.

Nothing stopped Gilchrist. He smashed Sangwan to two continuous fours and followed by a six. Bilakhia played sensibly and gave strike to Gilly.

Gilchrist hit a four of a no ball from Nehra and then a six in the free hit. DC reached fifty in 3.5 overs with the loss of Gibbs.

In the forth over, he reached his fifty with a single to cover point. Fastest fifty of IPL! The previous record was jointly held by McCullum of Kolkata and Yusuf Pathan off Rajasthan who scored fifty in 21 balls.

Sehwag brough himself to stop the run rate and get Gilly. He went for 25 runs. No run of the first ball, but rest of the balls were punished with the last ball going for a single. The second ball was an overstepped no ball, which Gilly sent to the boundary. The free hit full toos went for a six over long on. Next ball was a six over long off and the next ball was straight six to sightscreen. Hat-trick sixes!

DC moved to 84 for 1 in just 6 overs. The highest any team has scored in the powerplay. The next over was a silent one for DC as they added just 3 runs from Dilshan.

Mishra picked a wicket in his first over having Bilakhia stumped. He also picked Gilchrist in the last ball of the 10th over, though it came very late as all the damage has been done. He came down the track, tried to loft the ball, but takes the top edge and flew to short third man where Nannes took a good catch. Gilchrst was out for 85 in 35 balls scoring 10 fours and 5 sixes! DC needed 52 in the last overs.

Symonds replaced Gilchrist and hit two continuous fours in the first over after the strategic break. Mishra bowled a good line on the other end, but there was not much score to restrict.

Nehra was brought back, but that did not stop DC. Symonds hit him for two continuous fours as well. Mishra was the man for DD, but in a dead match!

He picked Symonds after being hit for a six. 8 runs in last 5 overs with 6 wickets in hand is easy for DC. Rohit and Suman played slowly and took 16 balls to reach the target as Deccan Chargers stormed into the finals!

Rightly Gilchrist was awarded the man of the match as none of the 21 other players could go near him!

Earlier, put into bat, DD made 153. Gilly made the right choice as he is sure that his team is good in chasing. His team proved that as well!

Gambhir and Warner went for duck in the first over. Harris had a dream start giving his team the wickets of 2 dangerous batsmen. With no run scored in the first four pballs, pressure drew Gambhir down the track. The ball was pitched little wide which Gambhir slashed in the air and went straight to RP Singh in third man. This time RP Singh grabbed it! His missed catch from Pandey changed the match for them against RC.

Next delivery, Warner hit staright to point where Gibbs grabbed it. DD were 0 for 2 in 1 over.

Dilshan hit RP Singh for a six and a four in the second over. Sehwag hammered two fours in Harri's next over to take DD to 23 for 2 in 3 overs. These two scored few more boundaries and took DD to 49 for 2 in 6 overs.

These two added 85 for the 3rd wicket in 58 balls. Sehwag trying to play a scoop over fine leg was trapped plumb in front of the wicket off Symonds. Poor short selection from the hard-hitter as it was soft short.

DeVilliers and Dilshan added 48 for the 4th wicket. DeVilliers scored 26 in 21 bals. Dilshan top scored with 65 in 51 balls which had 7 fours and a six. DD scored 70 runs in the last overs and finished with 153 on the board.

Match 56: RC v. DC: RC win and Enter Semi, DC lose, still enter semi on Better NRR!

Magnificiant century--the first by an Indian in the IPL, Pandey, took Bangalore to the third position in the table. This is the second century in this season with the first one from Delhi's DeVillier--an unbeaten 105 against CSK.

Pandey single handedly played superb innings reaching 50 in just 36 balls. His next fifty came in 31 balls giving him a wonderful experience! This is an important match for RC as the winners of this match get a place to the semi-finals. The loser, on comparision of Net Run Rate with Kings XI will qualify.

Deciding to bat, RC lost Kallis in the 2nd over for 5. Pandey scored most of the runs for RC as they ended the innings at 170. Pandey scored unbeaten 114 in 73 balls which had 10 fours and 4 sixes.

At the end of 10 overs, RC were 64 for 2 and expected to score another 70-80 runs and end the innings at 140-150.

Pandey opened his shoulders in the 11th over with two continuous sixes of Suman. He hit 2 fours of RP Singh in the 14th over. Dravid was out in the 15th over, but that did not stop Pandey from scoring 2 fours and take RC to 116 for 3 in 15 overs.

Jaskaran Singh went for 16 runs in the 16th over including a six and two fours. At the end of 18 overs, RC were 139 for 4. Harris bowled the 19th and conceeded 8 runs.

The last over helped RC to a challenging total. RP Singh went for 2 in the first ball of the 20th over. The second ball was a six while single was scored in the third.

Kohli scored a six, a two and finished the innings with a six. RP Singh, the winner of Purple Cap went for 23 runs in the last over.

During chase, Gibbs and Gilchrist scored 22 runs of the 5th over to take DC to 45 for no loss. The last over of powerplay from Merwe went for 19 runs including four byes and 2 sixes from Gibbs. It looked like these guys are leading the fight.

Akhil gave the break through by taking Gilchrist's wicket caught by Merwe. Last 10 overs needed 86. Suman was out in the last ball of the 11th over to Kumble.

Gibbs was out in the 15th over and DC were 119 for 3 in 15 requiring 52 in 30 balls.

Symonds was bowled by Merwe, the crucial wicket. Venugopal and Rohit Sharma succumbed to pressure as DC finished with 158 for 6.

If DC had reached this target in 11.3 overs, RC would have been eliminated and Kings XI Punjab entered the last four. But 170 in 11.3 overs, is next to impossible.

So, the four teams that qualified for the semi finals are: Delhi Daredevils (DD), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Bangalore Royal Challengers (RC), and Hyderabad Deccan Chargers (DC)

Delhi Daredevils will play Hyderabad Decccan Chargers on March 22, 2009 at 8:00 PM IST in the 1st semi final;

Bangalore Royal Challengers will play Chennai Super Kings on March 23, 2009 at 8:00 PM IST in the 2nd semi final.

Match 55: DD v. MI: Rahane's fifty in vain as Sehwag give Delhi another win!

Rahane's firing fifty did not help Mumbai to clinch a victory as Sehwag's fifty took it over. Put into bat, Mumbai lost Jayasuriya for a duck in the first over. The first two balls were wide but the rebowled first ball brought a wicket for Nannes.

Duminy fell for 9 while Mohammad Ashraful went for 2. Tendulkar and Rahane revived the innings as they put on 73 runs for the 4th wicket in 54 balls.

Tendulkar was bowled by Bhatia for 46. At the end of 15 overs, Mumbai were 109 for 5 and did not look to go beyound 140. But, Rahane brought fortune with a four or a six in every over. He reached his fifty in 37 balls. He was caught by DeVilliers of a slower one from Sangwan for 56. Harbhajan hit the last ball of the innings to a four as Mumbai ended the innings at 165 for 8.

Delhi reached the target easily. Warner and Gambhir added 36 in 3.3 overs before Warner fell for 15 caught by Ashraful off Kulkarni. Sehwag and Gambhir played aggressive innings did not bother about the lost wicket. Gambhir fell in the 12th over for 47.

Dilshan and Sehwag took Delhi closer to the target as they added 40 in just 19 balls. Dilshan and Sehwag fell next to each other in the 15th over from Bhajji.

DeVilliers was caught by Nayar of Harbhajan for 6 going for a big shot. Bhatia was bowled of the delivery. Though 4 wickets were lost in the span of 12 balls.

Mishra was lucky as the edge went for a four, otherwise it would been another wicket for Bhajji. Dinesh Karthik and Mishra took Delhi without adding anymore pressure!

Match 54: CSK v. KXI: Chennai is King! Dhoni beat Yuvaraj!

Kings XI Punjab, the dream to enter the last four was completely shunned by poor batting. Chasing 117, with the batting strength of Katich, Yuvaraj, Sangakkara, Pomersbach, Irfan, it was surprising that Kings XI meekly surrendered to the bowling attack of Super Kings.

Dhoni rightly used the spin attack very well. He also introduced Ashwin into the attack in this crucial game and it worked for him! These three spinners picked 6 wickets among them giving just 38 runs in 12 overs.

CSK got the break-through in the 2nd over when Thushara picked Sohal caught by Patel for 3. Murali was brought into attack in the 5th over itslef and he conceeded 1 run.

Ashwin was given the ball and 3 runs were added to scoreboard. Murali picked Katich in his next over when Katich move across to play it fine missed the ball and lost his leg stump.

The trick of playing out Murali worked against KXI. End of 10 overs, KXI were 42 for 2. Murali picked Pomersbach caught by Raina at slip.

The big break through came in the 13th over bowled by Raina. Yuvaraj gave room to play the short ball to the off side but the ball kept low and hit the stumps.

End of over 15, KXI were 59 for 4, needed 58 in the last 30 balls. Ashwin picked two wickets in 16th over--Sangakkara was caught & bowled and Mota was trapped leg before. Lee trying to charge gave a simple catch to Oram at long on.

48 from 18 balls, 3 wickets in hand. Gony dropped a catch at short fine leg for Irfan Pathan and it went for four.

Last 2 overs needed 40 runs, 8 runs were scored off Thushara's over and Irfan got out in the 5th ball.

Last over, 32 runs. Only 7 runs were scored as Kings XI messed the nice chance and threw themselves out of the tournament. The only chance KXI has is, in the match between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers, the losing team has to lose in a big way--either by runs or with more balls remaining.

Murali was given man of the match for his wonderful spell of 4-0-8-2.

Earlier, deciding to bat first, Chennai started well scoring a four in each over during powerplay. When Baily was out, the score was 40 in 4.5 overs.

But, Chennai lost wickets quickly and did not build partnerships. Patel was the top scorer with 32 runs. Badrinath and Dhoni fell cheaply for 4 and 2 respectively. Both the wickets were picked by Sreesanth in the 10th over. Dhoni's wicket was amazing as Sreesanth sent a beautiful inswinging yorker and Dhoni did not bring down the bat in time to save his stumps. The tail did not add any value as they all fell for single digit score.

With this victory, it was sure that Chennai has booked their place for the semi-finals and occupy the 2nd spot below Delhi. The third and fouth spots will be decided after the match between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers on 21st. The winner will qualify but the last position will be decied based on the net run rate. Either the loser of the match or Kings XI Punjab will take the 4th spot.

Match 53: KKR v. RR: KKR on Late Winning Song! Sends Rajasthan Home!

With another win, McCullum's KKR has pakced Rajasthan Royals home. Yes, the last year's champion is out of the tournament. Though there is no impact to KRR, a win for RR would have helped them to wait and watch other games to see their luck!

It was a low scoring affair with Rajasthan Royals bundled for 101. Naman Ojha started the innings well scoring 22 runs of the first over bowled by Hodge. Put into bat, Ojha started the innings with a six over square leg. David Hussey dropped the catch for Ojha in the next ball. He played the same shot, but it took edge and went to Hussey who failed to hold on to it.

Six from the third ball over long off. The next two balls went for one run each. Ojha against scored a six off the last ball, again over square leg.

Quiney, Asnodkar, and Ojha were dismissed in the three continuous overs. Each over had a wicket for KKR. Botha was bowled by Agarkar for 8. At the end of 10 overs, RR were 61 for 5. Yusuf Pathan once again failed as he was run out for 9. RR managed play out the full quota of 20 overs and set 102 as target.

Though looked like an easy targt, the pitch was helping the slower bowlers and turning well. McCullum started with 2 fours in the first over but Ganguly lost his wicket in the first over. He came down the track to hit over covers, but managed to hit staraight to Jadeja at point.

McCullum was trapped in the first ball of the second over. Munaf grabbed Yashpal caught by Quiney for 6. N Ojha did a good stumping to send dangerous Hodge, who played the ball to silly point and takes off. The ball spun back and went to keeper who grabbed it and removed the bails. Third umpire found the bat was in the air!

Hussey was caught at deep midwicket off Botha. Unnecessary short at this point in time. KKR was in deep trouble having just 38 on the board with 5 wicket in hand.

Last 10 overs needed 64 runs. Shaikh ran out himself for 6 when there was no run. Shukla took the responsibility on his shoulders with Agarkar on the other end.

Shukla's six over midwicket of Warne was good to watch! Last 5 overs needed 37 runs. Shukla scored 10 runs in the 16th over bowled by Jadeja. Agarkar and Shukla managed Warne well. They scored just singles of his last over.

21 from 18 balls. Shukla took the risk! He hit Botha over midwicket for a huge six. Relief in KKR camp and pressure on RR as they are on the verge of losing the chance to book their slot for the last four.

11 from 12 balls. Shukla playing wonderfully, timing the ball well. He hit the slower ball from Henderson over extra cover for a boundary. In the remaining four balls, 3 single's were scored.

4 runs of 6 balls and KKR finished the match in the third ball. RR out of the tournament!

Match 52: RC v. DD: Kallis takes RC closer to Semis! Win Crucial Match!

Kallis played a crucial innings during the chase of 135 which helped them to go closer to the last four place. This is an important game for RC, a must win situation to stay in the competition.

With 12 points and two matches to go, a win would fetch two more points! Chasing 135, Uthappa showed one more failure in his batting. He was caught behind of Nehra for 1 in the first over. The two experienced men--Kallis and Dravid took the responsibility on their shoulders. Dravid was caught and bowled off Nagar for well made 38 off 34 balls. RC were 72 for 2 in 12.3 overs, requiring 63 in 45 balls.

Kallis and Taylor took the score closer to the target. The 29-run partnership was broken by Nagar. Taylor going for hat-trick sixes was caught just inside the rope by Vettori for 25. He hit a four and 3 sixes in his 12-ball innings.

Earlier, DD deciding to bat first, lost Sehwag and Manhas in the first over for duck. Praveen Kumar gave the start the RC needed. Gambhir and DeVilliers added 36 for the 3rd wicket. Gambhir fell at the end of powerplay for 27 and he scored the only six of the Delhi innings.

Dinesh Karthik is having a decent tournament so far. He scored valuable 31 and became the top scorer for Delhi. Nagar scored 20 and also picked two wickets in his bowling.

Match 51: KKR v CSK: McCullum and Hodge seal long waited win for KKR!

The poor bowling cost the match for CSK. During the innings break, Srikanth mentioned that KKR has good batsmen like McCullum, Hodge, Ganguly, Hussey who are dangerous. He was right in cautioning CSK about it!

Chasing 189, KKR has never done that before in IPL 2. CSK would have felt the same result in this match but KKR had something different in store.

McCullum's firing 81 and Hodge's unbeaten 71 saw KKR win their first match after a long gap. This is their second win in 13 matches!

No bowling change helped Dhoni as McCullum was in full form. He blasted two fours in the first over by Morkel whereas Tyagi restricted Ganguly for a single.

McCullum demolished Morkel completely as he dictated the terms. He hit a six, a four, a four of no ball. That over added 16 to the total and KKR reached 27 in 3 overs.

Ganguly tried his best to score but nothing went in his favor this time. He would be okay as long as the team wins! He gave room and tried to cut the ball pitched on leg stump. The ball took inside edge and rubbed the stumps. Only Dhoni found the bail falling and appealed it correctly.

McCullum did not bother about Ganguly getting out. He hit Tyagi in both the sides of the pitch! He started with a four through cover point, another four in fine leg, third four to mid-wicket, fourth continuous four to extra cover and a six over fine leg in the last ball. With that six, he also reached 50 in just 21 balls.

The next two overs were silent and KKR were 83 for 1 in 10 overs, requiring 106 in 60 balls. Oram missed a chance at long-on for McCullum which could have turned the match in favor of CSK. McCullum sloged the delivery from Jakati but did not time it well as it went straight to Oram, above his head. He stepped back, jumped, got a touch but missed it. It went for a six! He was on 66 when the chance was missed!

Finally McCullum fell in the last ball of the 14th over from Jakati. McCullum tried to slog Jakathi, the ball brushed the bottom of the bat and skims the off stump. Dhoni appeals and the umpire refrred to TV umpire. First it looked like Dhoni was appealing for stumping, but the TV replay showed that the ball brushed the stump and dislodged the ball. He returned to the dug out for 81 in 48 balls which had 11 fours and 3 sixes.

5 overs 58 runs. Hussey was run out and the match was turning towards CSK. Saha hit a six and a four of Balaji to reduce the equation to 38 from 18 balls. Morkel went for 13 runs in the 18th over.

Last 12 balls, 25 runs. Balaji's over turned the match in favor of KKR, taking them closer to victory. First ball Hodge hit a six over long off, the next two balls were one run each, another six over bowlers head, a four of the last ball by Saha.

Last over, 6 runs needed. Raina was given the ball. He bowled a tight line and never game room. He bowled flat and did not give chance for the batsmen to come down the track. No run in the first ball, a single of the second ball by Hodge, third ball was another single by Saha, fourth was a single.

The quick running between the wickets brought two runs in the fifth ball. Last ball, one run to win. Raina bowled a little wide, Saha reached it and chipped it over cover. There is no fielder in the cover as KKR reaches the winning target!

Earlier, CSK scored 188 in 20 overs losing 3 wickets. Hayden was rested in this match too. Patel and Baily opened the innings and played well. They added 59 for the first wicket in 37 balls.

Both the batsmen were run out trying to steal a single. Raina scored 52 in 36 balls with 3 sixes and 3 fours. Dhoni remained not out on 40 while Morkel scored 21 in 10 balls.

Match 51: McCullum and Hodge demolish CSK! Good win at the end!

KKR skipper ensured that they do not get out of the IPL 2 without another win to their credit. This win has put CSK on the back foot as they have to win their last league game against Kings XI Punjab.

Yuvi lead Kings XI also is under pressure as it is a do-or-die game for them as well. Last year also, CSK was in similar position forcing them to a situate where they have to win their last game.

Hoep they win this time.

CSK: 188 for 3 in 20 overs
KKR: 189 for 3 in 20 overs

Match 49: KXI v. DC: Yuvaraj's Hat-trick help KXI stay in IPL 2!

The hat-trick by Yuvaraj Singh, the only player to have fetched two hat-tricks a season, helped KXI put pressure on DC. In the last over, 11 runs required and DC batsmen were not able to score. The wicket of Rohit Sharma was crucial which was picked by Irfan Pathan in the last over when DC needed 4 runs in 3 balls.

Yuvaraj picked his second hat-trick in the 14th over of the innings. He picked Gibbs caught at point of a short ball in the last ball of his second over and 12th over of the innings. He then bowled a beautiful delivery to beat Symonds. The ball was pitched on the middle and tempted Symonds to come out, the ball turned and beat him. Sangakkara fumbled but grabbed the ball in the second attempte and removed the bails.

Next delivery, poor decision by Venugopal to leave the ball pitched on the off and curvin in, lost his stumps.

At this stage, DC needed 54 from 36 balls. Rohit played another superb innings to bring DC into the match. Last 3 overs needed 43 runs and Rohit took on Mota. He hit him for two sixes and a four to get 18 runs to the board.

Last 2 overs needed 25 runs. Lee took Ravi Teja in the second ball but Rohit hit a six over square leg. The last ball was an over-stepped no ball which was also punished for over over third man. The re-bowled ball was a single to Rohit and he took the strike.

Last over needed 11 runs, Irfan Pathan to Rohit Sharma! Two runs of the first ball, four of the second ball to third man, next ball was a wide.

4 balls, 4 runs. Match in the hands of DC! Going for a big shot over mid on, he missed the ball and was bowled. Poor shot selection. He could have played a single or two!

3 ball, 4 runs. No run of the next delivery to RP Singh. DC panicking! 2 balls, 4 runs. RP Singh took on the slower short ball and hit it in the air. Irfan ran himself few yards and caught it!

1 ball, 4 runs. Harris hit it covers and went for two. Jaskaran Singh went for third as he was going to the danger end, but the poor decision by Harris to run to the pavilion after completing the second could have changed the game if he ran the third.

He may have lost his wicket, but a luck would have turned the game!

Earlier, put into bat KXI made 134. Sangakkara was the top scorer with 56 in 43 balls with 4 fours and a six.

Peculiar Things in KKR v. DC!

In match number 48 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Hyderabad Deccan Chargers, peculiar things happened.

RP Singh Removed from Bowling

RP Singh was removed from bowling for bowling two waist height full toss deliveries. He was bowling the 19th over, first ball was a full toss to David Hussey.

Second ball went for a single by Saha. Next ball, again a full toss which Hussey used it well this time to hit a boundary. Two full tosses and RP Singh was removed from the attack by the umpire. Thankfully, it was at the end of the innings. But, it almost impacted the match for DC as Harmeet Singh, who bowled the remaining 5 balls went for 20 runs including 2 sixes and a four.

Appeal for Obstructing the Field

In the 10th over of the innings, Ganguly tucked the ball to short fine leg and went for a single. The throw came to non-striker's end and Ganguly came between the stump and the ball. Gilchrist appealed for Obstructing the Field, long disucssions and argument, finally umpire said not out. TV replay showed that he used his left hand to try to stop the ball.

No ball for 3 fielders

In the last over, DC needed 21 runs. McCullum's team had only 3 fielders inside the ring and umpire called no ball. It was a good decision. It went for four starting the over with 5 runs, changing the equation to 16 in 6 balls.

26 scored of Last Over

The last over required 21 runs for victory for DC. Mortaza bowled the last over and he went for 26 runs including a no ball of the first ball. First ball was a four with a no ball, leg bye of the second ball, one run in the third, fourth ball went for a six, fifth ball was a wide, next ball was 2, 5th ball was a four and last ball was a six. This is a record for winning by scoring most runs in the last over.

Match 48: DC v. KKR: Rohit Sharma Rides Mortaza with 21 Runs in Last Over!

What a match for Rohit Sharma! He scored 27 runs in the last over to give DC the winning points! Last over required 21 runs and Bangaladesh's Mortaza had the ball. First ball was a peculiar no ball call from the umpire which went for a four. KKR had only 3 fielders inside the ring as against the mandatory 4. Though McCullum argued, the umpire was right. McCullum should have been more careful.

Next ball was a leg bye. 15 required off 5 balls. Venugopal scored a single to third man of the edge.

14 required of 4 balls. Mortaza bowled a full toss and Rohit hit it over midwicket for a six. Bad bowling! The ball was lost and the replacement ball was provided.

8 runs needed of 3 balls. Poor bowling as Mortaza bowled wide of the off stump and wisely Rohit left it to keeper.

7 runs in 3 balls. Two runs to long off.

5 runs in 2 balls. Full on the wide of off-stump and Rohit hits it wide of cover to fetch an important boundary. Mortaza spoiled the game for KKR!

1 run required of last ball. Short on the middle stump and Rohit pulled it over fine leg for a six! What a way to win the match!

Chasing 161, Gilchrist and Gibbs started well with a 62-run partnership between them. Gilchrist demolished the bowling attack as he hit 2 sixes in the 2nd over. Mortaza went for 15 runs with both the sixes went over mid-wicket boundary.

Gibbs hit two continuous fours off Ishanth Sharma and Gilly took his turn with two boundaries in the next over from Mortaza.

Murali Karthik started well with his first over as he gave just one run as DC were 41 for no loss in 5 overs.

Gilly lost his wicket in the 10th over to Hodge caught by substitute Shukla at deep square leg.

End of 10 overs, DC were 71 for 1, requiring 90 in last 10 overs. Gibbs was caught by Hussey of Murali Karthik for 28. End of 15 overs, DC were 105 for 2 requiring 56 in 5 overs.

Suman was run out going for the 2nd. Symonds hit to long off and Suman came back for the 2nd. The throw from Hodge went straight to Agarkar who collected it well to remove the bails. Earlier, Suman was dropped by Murali Karthik when he was on 26.

Rohit Sharma joined Symonds for the 4th wicket. Symonds hit a six and a four of Agarkar to change the equation to 34 in 18 balls.

Symonds going for a single of a no ball was short of his crease. Mortaza does a direct hit at non-striker's end for sending Symonds back.

27 required of 2 overs. Agarkar bowled well and conceeded just 6 runs. Rohit finished the 21 runs in the last over.

Rohit Sharma scored 32 in 13 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes.

Put into bat, KKR started with a 27-run first wicket partnership between McCullum and Ganguly. McCullum was caught in the 5th over for 20. End of 6 overs, KKR were 31 for 1.

Peculiar things happened in this match! Ganguly going for a single after tucking away to short fine leg, came in the way of the throw and made an attempt to stop the ball hanging his left hand out. Gilchrist argued with umpire claiming "Obstructing the Field" for long time and finally it was given not out.

End of 10 overs, KKR were 50 for 1. Ganguly was caught by Harris of Ishanth Sharma for well madd 33, but he consumed 41 balls.

End of 15 overs, KKR were 89 for 2. Hussey hit a six of Ojha and Hodge hit a four in the same over. Harris picked Hodge caught by Harmeet Singh after conceeding a four in the 2nd ball.

End of over 18, KKR were 118 for 3. RP Singh started the 19th over with a waist height no ball. He bowled one more full toss at waist height in the 2nd ball which Hussey sent it for four. Two waise height no balls and RP Singh was removed from the attack.

Harmeet Singh was brought as a replacement to bowl the remaining 5 balls. Hussey hit a four between long off and extra cover. The next two balls went for two each and the last two balls went for six each. Both the sixes were good shots and poor bowling by Harmeet. 28 runs were scored in that over.

Symonds bowled the last over as he went for 2 sixes and also got two wickets--Saha was caught and Hussey was run out. KKR ended with 160 for 5 as they scored 110 runs in the last 10 overs.

Rohit Sharma was declared man of the match for his match winning knock, scoring 21 runs in the last over.

With this win, DC has 14 points in 13 matches. They are in the 3rd place while no impact in KKR's position.
