Mascarenhas provided great breakthrough for RR, the champions. In the second ball of the first over, Ryder was caught behind. Taylor was bowled in the next delivery and shocked everyone leaving RC at 0 for 2. Uthappa also fell for Mascarenhas trying to improve the scoring rate. RC were struggling at 17 for 3.
Pietersen and Dravid played sensible innings as they put on 35 runs in 4 overs. Kevin got out for 32 off 30 balls while Dravid went on to score 50. No one gave him proper company to build partnership. Kohli, Akhil and Praveen Kumar did not stay long as RC were restricted for 133.
Everyone thought the champions would chase 134 but Kevin Pietersen surprised everyone. Kumble picked 5 wickets for the first time in IPL. He had the figures of 5 for 5 in 3.1 overs with a maiden--the first one to bowl maiden in second season of IPL.
Earlier, Praveen Kumar took two wickets to dismiss Smith and Asnodkar. I would say that no batsmen played sensible innings. What required was little over 6.6 runs per over and any team chasing requires to bat all the 20 overs and keep wickets. The highest score was 11 by Henderson, Y Pathan, and RJ Jadeja.
Only one four was scored in the Royal's innings, though couple of sixes were scored.
